As a mandatory consultation document for civil society organizations, the Center for Philanthropy and Social Investment (CEFIS), of the Adolfo Ibáñez University, published its guide for more effective administrations in civil society.
"Developing a third sector in society that is considered as relevant as public and business, requires organizations whose work is meaningful", is one of the conclusions of the Guide for the Effective Governance of Foundations and Corporations in Chile, prepared by the CEFIS of the Adolfo Ibáñez University, the San Carlos de Maipo Foundation and the collaboration of the Association of Family Businesses, Viento Sur Foundation, and the participation of more than 50 foundations and corporations in the country, such as the Colunga Foundation.
The guide, the first academic-based tool developed in Chile, seeks to strengthen the corporate governments of non-profit entities in the region. Based on the tasks of governance and its administrative, strategic and sustainability role, four important axes are identified that determine the effectiveness of a governance: clarity of purpose, adequate composition of the board, efficient functioning in contact with management executive and legitimacy, transparency and relationship with their environment.
"In this guide we propose a modern and clear model, with the goal of empowering philanthropic organizations to increase their social impact. The effective governance model, with its axes and recommendations, goes beyond the codes of good practices that an organization has to comply with. It proposes principles to follow to improve organizational performance and its social relevance, "explained Steffen Bethmann, CEFIS research associate and lead author of the publication.
The document was presented and discussed on Friday, May 10, with a panel that included the participation of Alejandra Candia, Undersecretary of Social Evaluation of the Ministry of Social Development; Juan José Cueto, Director of the Colunga Foundation; Alejandro Ferreiro, lawyer and director of companies; and Marcelo Sánchez, General Manager of the San Carlos de Maipo Foundation.
At the launch, the table discussed their views based on the experiences they have had in civil society. "As in companies, we are required to report. We have to reach much higher standards than in the private world, "said Juan José Cueto, Director of Fundación Colunga, adding:" Civil society has the opportunity to make a relevant contribution to the country's challenges, and has to strive to be up to the task. "
The importance of a constant monitoring of the progress of the work and its impact, was highlighted by the undersecretary Alejandra Candia: "The culture of evaluation has to be impregnated in the directories. It is something that has to be incorporated from the first day, which transmits responsibility and transparency ".
Meanwhile, Marcelo Sánchez, Manager of Fundación San Carlos de Maipo, said: "The role of the General Manager or the Executive Director is to be able to understand the mandate of the board of directors, which is contained in the strategic planning, and then execute it effectively with the team. "
At that point, about having a clear objective to accomplish and doing it in an articulated manner, the lawyer Alejandro Ferreiro, argued: "Sometimes, instead of collaborating, we compete between organizations. We are inspired more by the glory of the instrument we have built than the fulfillment of the mission. We have to think collaboratively with others to reach that common purpose. "
