Both organizations, belonging to ColungaHUB, generated synergies to gather two thousand girls in six cities of the country, in different activities that encourage them to participate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
"INGENIOUS 2017, Science and Technology for All", is an initiative of ComunidadMujer and Girls in Tech, born as part of the commemoration of the World Day of Girls in ICT promoted by the United Nations (April 27). Both organizations came together to contribute to the eradication of gender stereotypes that affect women's vocational decisions, limiting their educational and work projects, which is reflected in their low participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics ( STEM, for its acronym in English).
Therefore, efforts have been articulated to carry out this project, which will bring together two thousand girls from 8th grade to 2nd grade in six cities of the country: Antofagasta, La Serena, Valparaíso, Santiago, Concepción and Temuco. Until April 29, the girls will participate in workshops that include practical workshops on programming, inspirational talks given by prominent women, science fairs and robotics, among other activities.
"INGENIOUS is an invitation to recognize and reflect on the influence of gender stereotypes from early education on the life trajectory of girls in our country. We need that half of the population that we are forming to be interested and develop more and more in the fields where they are currently underrepresented, as is the case of STEM. We are missing a lot of talents by not stimulating them and motivating them as we should. We all have a responsibility in this, "he says. Esperanza Cueto, president of ComunidadMujer.
For its part Maitetxu Larraechea, executive director of Girls in Tech Chile, maintains that INGENIOSAS goes hand in hand with the mission of this international foundation that for years has been organizing, inspiring and connecting women in technology: "In previous years, we celebrated and made visible in Chile the Day World of Girls in ICT. Today, INGENIOSAS extends the focus to include science, mathematics and engineering, and also invites young women with a humanist vocation to transform these fields with these tools. This initiative consolidates our role as the largest women's community in technology in Chile, reaches regions, and is prepared to grow in Latin America. "
