"Our experience at ColungaHUB has been very enriching "
Best Buddies Chile is an organization that promotes the labor, social and educational participation of people with intellectual disabilities and developmental disorders. We talked with their Executive Director to learn more about their motivations to enter the social world.
How did you get to civil society?
In 2004 I worked in a Waldorf School with children and young people with disabilities, where they taught me the real reason to educate. Since then, I knew that my vocation should be to provide support tools so that these people, regardless of their age, would be valued as people and not from their condition.
What is the organization currently working on?
Best Buddies Chile is developing strongly its labor inclusion program, under the employment model with support for young people and adults with intellectual disabilities and developmental disorders, according to the new Law 21.015. We are giving tools to both families and companies, to implement a job inclusion responsibly.
On the other hand, we are also developing our Ambassadors program, where young people and adults with intellectual disabilities speak at different institutional and business events, as a way to educate society on the issue of rights.
Finally, we are developing our social inclusion program through the friendship program, where we carry out leisure and free time activities among groups of inclusive friends. All these programs are nationally and internationally accredited.
What is your biggest challenge?
Our biggest challenge is to change the concept of disability in relation to being indifferent to difference and accepting diversity from their abilities, and not from compassion.
How has your experience been at ColungaHUB?
Our experience at ColungaHUB has been very enriching. We have been able to nurture all the actions carried out by the different foundations that we are in the community, and thus be able to work in networks on all the necessary issues to validate people from their rights.
