The report on Situation of the Rights of Children and Adolescents corresponds to the analysis carried out in 2017 by the National Observatory of the Rights of the Child, belonging to National Council for Children, and that defines a methodology to annually monitor the Chilean reality from the perspective of rights.
The document demonstrates the important gaps in rights to education, health, freedom of opinion, equality, special protection, participation, development, play, sports and recreation, among others, and that represent some of the important challenges for policy development public in the country.
"In relation to the indicators of results, there are urgent problems to face in the action plans and public policies. The stagnation of infant and child mortality, the worrying increase in overweight and obesity, the high consumption of drugs and tobacco, the high levels of serious violence affecting children, abandonment, long stays and catastrophic situations that institutionalized children live, as well as high levels of inequality according to family income, undoubtedly have a dramatic impact on many aspects of life, both material and cultural. This inequality 'from the cradle' is a discrimination that society in general disapproves and that allows conceptualize it as an inequity, which opens realistic perspectives to face it with more urgency, strength and decision, "the report states in its conclusions.
